Use a rigid tape measure. For a floor opening, record width by length. For a wall or ceiling opening, record width by height. Measure at more than one point if the opening is not perfectly square, and use the smallest clear dimension when checking fit.
3. Check the opening depth
Measure the usable depth behind the surface. This matters for products with a boot, sleeve, damper, recessed tray or floor-matching insert. Note any framing, duct transitions or obstructions.
4. Compare the overall face dimensions
The face must overlap the opening enough to cover unfinished edges, but it must not collide with baseboards, walls, cabinets, trim, lighting or other nearby details. Use the product drawing rather than estimating from a photograph.
5. Confirm how it mounts
Record existing screw spacing and note whether the opening has suitable backing. A drop-in register, surface-mounted grille and flush architectural frame do not install the same way.

A vent listed as 4 × 10 will commonly fit a 4 × 10 opening, while its visible face is larger. That convention is common, but it is not universal. Always compare the opening, neck, face and depth dimensions shown for the specific product.
